After-treatment

Energy peat production in Sweden has taken place for so long that in some cases it is time for the surfaces to be closed down and restored.

What are the alternatives?
After-treatment should take place in consultation with the authorities and land-owners involved. Before production begins, the producer should set aside funds as security to assure satisfactory after-treatment of the site. The alternatives for after-treatment that so far have been discussed are:

• Afforestation or planting of short rotation energy woods

• Farmland, pasture or planting of various crops

• Shallow lake or new wetland

• Recreation of bog, with peat formation

• Specific measures such as using the area for waste water purification, a golf course, fish farming, etc.
